👏 Announcing WABE 2024 Planning Team ! 👏

I am thrilled to announce that the dates for the 2024 WABE Conference have been officially set! We eagerly anticipate welcoming our esteemed WABE colleagues to the JW Marriott ICE District in the vibrant city of Edmonton, Alberta, from September 23 to 25.

Join Winnipeg Media Members and WABE friends for a Monday Meetup May 6th, 2024. 6:30pm at the Canadian Brewhouse. Presentation at 7-8pm by Roy Folkman of Cinesys on HOW WILL AI CHANGE THE MEDIA INDUSTRY. Light snacks provide an opportunity to connect with other Manitobans working with media technology. Sponsor the event for $200 and we will include your business logo in the event listing, signage onsite, and mentions during the event!

Organizing such an event, especially in these times, demands the concerted efforts of a dedicated team of volunteers. The challenges of coordinating the event behind the scenes are amplified as our industry experiences significant shifts, with professionals transitioning between roles and companies undergoing rebranding.

Throughout these changes, I have found myself increasingly reliant on both my 20-year-old address book, and digital platforms such as LinkedIn to connect with industry peers who may be interested in attending, contributing as vendor partners, or offering their time as volunteers to foster WABE’s growth.

I am always thankful when new friends put up their hand and show their support, so I am delighted to introduce the 2024 WABE Executive Council who will be steering this year’s event.

A huge thank you to them for their wonderful support!

The recent developments within the Canadian media landscape, including layoffs and the sale of radio stations by Bell Media, have sparked widespread conversation. Having personally navigated through six cycles of layoffs, including one that directly affected me, I understand the resilience required during such transitions. In response, I have reached out to colleagues offering support and encouragement, recognizing the essential skills and knowledge our community possesses, which remain invaluable across various sectors.

This kind of uncertainty for those who are left at stations and the loss of employment for those let go is emotional and difficult. I do think that the knowledge and skills of everyone, from journalists to operators and technicians to sales, are needed everywhere for a variety of businesses working with media technology. I am now seeing businesses not previously on my radar actively making and distributing content, some of which are now hiring and looking for media gurus to fill roles.

For those seeking new opportunities, I would like to highlight several companies currently hiring in the media technology field:

The SAIT MET Program is offering MMDA 004 – Acoustics and Audio Systems starting February 26th . In this course, you’ll learn the basics of sound transmission in an acoustic environment. You’ll gain an understanding of how acoustic behavior affects our perception of sound and the important role of physical factors, such as studio design. You’ll also learn about the proper placement of loudspeakers, how audio signals are manipulated, recorded, and distributed, and how digital audio is created and transmitted. Lastly, in this course, you’ll examine unique audio workflows such as Ethernet audio and the appropriate technology support for each flow.

WABE remains dedicated to providing an accessible platform for media technology professionals to connect, learn, and grow. Our volunteer-driven community has thrived for 74 years, a testament to its significance to us all. I look forward to a successful convention in Edmonton and to the continued growth of our vibrant community.

 All My Best Regards,
