2020 WABE Presidents Message
Dear WABE Friends,
Well, we have made it through another Western Canadian winter… hopefully I didn’t just jinx it. The past several months has gone by quickly and yet I feel like things are just starting to slow down a bit a work, which helps with the organizing of our next conference. Can you believe that this will be WABE’s 70th year? How amazing is it to be involved with something that has endured for so long? That fact alone makes me so proud to be a part of this awesome community.
This year, we will be back in my hometown of Edmonton, again at the Delta Edmonton South Hotel from October 4-6th. We had a great experience at this location last time, so we expect much of the same for this year. We have an awesome local committee this year with good diversity of TV, radio, and digital experience. Also, for the first time in 70 years, we have equal male and female representation on the convention committee! We have already discussed some ideas for papers including successfully managing projects, RF and transmitter site safety, and engineering disaster recovery and lessons learned. Nothing is set in stone yet, so if you have a topic that would be of interest, please don’t hesitate to reach out to myself, or our Radio Papers Chair Mike Modney or our TV Papers Chair Tessa Potter.
This year, I think that the focus should be on ‘Moving Forward Together’. I see this theme in action every year with exhibitors on the show floor helping each other set-up and delegates from competing stations sharing their experiences. I have also noticed in the industry that there is less separation between TV, Radio and Digital. Although the end technologies may be different, the core values of engineering are the same and we need to start being more collaborative with each other to provide support that this industry needs for the next 70 years.
